Out of nowhere Empty Out of nowhere

The air stood still. The birds were silent in the trees. The mist clung to the ground like a blanket. The only sound was the breathing of the small contingent of Gilnean militia fighters. Scanning the surrounding area, Aiura held up a hand for silence, frowning deeply. Something wasn't right.

Five second passed. Ten. Nothing moved. Aiura's ears twitched and her tail flicked back and forth like a cat's. She turned in a slow circle, weapons ready, singular gaze flitting from one tree to the next, to the top of the ridge, searching for...something. Whatever was out there.

One of her men whispered, "Wot izzit, Cap'n?" Aiura shushed him with a look, indicating with hand motions the ridge that rose to their right. One of the worgen growled, "I don'..." Then they heard it. A sound so small and seemingly insignificant that they would have missed it if they hadn't all been on high alert. As one, the worgen all turned to face the ridge, weapons at the ready.

Aiura recognized the sound. "INCOMIIING!!!" she roared, and a second later a barrel trailing green smoke sailed out of the fog. The troops scattered just in time, getting just out of blast radius as the barrel shattered where they had stood a moment before, spewing its deadly contents across the road.

"The ridge!" Ai yelled. "Get around it and disable their catapults!" The Gilnean force split in two, each half going around one side of the ridge, Ai leading them along the far side. Another plague barrel impacted behind them, but they were well out of range. As both parties came around the opposite side of the ridge, they converged on the single plague catapult, demolishing it in moments. Ai blinked. There were no Forsaken in sight.

The scars on her face twinged. This was wrong. "Wot the 'eck?" growled one of her soldiers. "Where'd the scum bugger off to?" Aiura gazed out into the fog, which was still too heavy to see very far. "What've I missed," she muttered to herself. There was something abou- Her heart gave a sudden lurch as the realization of what had happened hit her. What she had led her men into. In the best traditions of alien military officers everywhere, she shouted a warning to her men. "ITS A TRAP!!!"

Too late. A plague barrel hurtled out of nowhere and exploded ten feet away. She frantically looked around for a way out. They were too exposed on the ridge. They had nowhere to run but downhill, towards the catapults. Right into their line of fire. There was nothing for it. If they stayed here, they were dead, period. "Retreat! Get out of here! Move!" Immediately, the small contingent fled down the hill as one.

But they were too exposed. More plague barrels exploded in their midst, felling some soldiers instantly, choking others with their deadly fumes. Three men went down. They were still two-thirds of the way up the hill. A fourth man fell, pierced by an arrow through the chest. Then a fifth, and a sixth. More plague barrels exploded around them and ahead of them, cutting off a direct path of retreat. Nine men down. Still halfway up the hill.

Their dying screams filled Aiura's ears, and she tried to shut them out, to concentrate on escaping with as many men alive as possible. There! A path through the lethal green mist. "This way!" she yelled, and her remaining troops followed. Three-fourths down the hill. Twelve men down. Thirteen. As each one fell, Ai's anger and frustration at herself grew. She cursed her own carelessness for leading them into such a massacre.

They made it to the bottom of the hill with fifteen men down. They could see the catapults now. There were five, each positioned strategically so they could cover the entire area. Aiura took one look and ordered her men around the side of the hill. They made it around the rise, but not before losing three more men to arrows from somewhere in the mist.

As they rounded the rise, ranks of Forsaken swordsmen came into view. Aiura's heart sank. With half her fighting force gone, they stood little chance against the footmen arrayed against them. But there was no turning back. With a single word, she gave the order to charge. "GILNEAAAAAS!!!" The remaining militia fighters took up her battle cry, voices combining into a savage roar as the two sides crashed together.

They were outnumbered at least two to one. The Gilneans fought tooth and claw, tearing through the ranks of Forsaken, but Aiura could see that there was nothing for it. As more of her men fell to the swords and axes of the Forsaken soldiers, she looked about for any avenue of retreat. The forest was dense enough that her men might - just might - have a chance of shaking off Forsaken pursuit.

Slashing a leering Fosaken through the kidneys, she lifted her ragged voice above the cacophony of battle. "Disperse! Retreat into the forest!" Most of her remaining men obeyed, dealing what wounding blows they could to their combatants before rushing off into the trees. But Rogers and Fletcher made their way to her, and the three formed a triangle back-to-back.

"Get out of here!" she shouted at them, but they stood their ground stoically. "Not leavin' without you, Captain!" Rogers replied as he tore a Forsaken footman apart. "That was an order, blast it! I'll be right behin-" Ai stopped mid-word as the Forsaken troops suddenly broke ranks, dashing off back up the road. She didn't have time to guess why when a plague barrel exploded beside her.

The force of the impact hurled her against a tree, knocking the breath out of her. Shaking her head to clear it, she stood up, groggily, looking about for Rogers and Fletcher. Rogers was dead, and Fletcher nowhere to be seen. The ground was littered with Gilnean and Forsaken corpses. Mostly Gilnean. She gazed upon the scene, cursing herself for leading her men into an ambush.

Setting off through the trees, she glanced back occasionally to make sure she wasn't being followed. Her throat and lungs burned, and she felt weaker by the minute, but she forced herself to keep running. She had to get back to Murati. Her breathing ragged and punctuated by hacking coughs, she staggered onwards, back to base.

Half an hour later, she staggered into camp, heading straight for Murati's tent. A healer tried to stop her, but she waved him away. Arriving at the command tent, she ducked through the flaps, looking around. Murati wasn't there. Another bout of coughing racked her frame. Feeling her strength ebbing, she stumbled towards the command table, rasping for breath. The fire in her lungs was an inferno now.

Her knees buckled and she collapsed to the ground just as the healer entered the command tent. Her vision dimmed, the burning in her lungs spreading to her limbs. The healer was kneeling over her and yelling something, but she couldn't hear him. Her vision faded to black, a single thought in the forefront of her mind before she passed out.

I've failed.
